For a few years back when I was in my late high school years I was diagnosed with Hyperglycemia. I no longer have it, but I met with a dietitian over that time and learned how to eat accordingly to my body. I learned how to listen to my body and know what are healthy alternatives.
My husband and I decided we wanted to do a "cleansing diet" if you may. We wanted to get back on the healthy road and not unconsciously eat poor. I am a firm believer in "Cheat meals". I think it provides you with the endurance you need to eat healthy for life, and not just for a month or 6 month long diet. It's about pacing yourself in a world with lots of goodies we hate to say goodbye to. Because we aren't hyperglycemic we have added in a few things to our diet to keep it balanced. For instance, I was not aloud to have even skim milk or fruits, but since those things are healthy for you, we've added them in. The big thing is to eat "whole" foods. Don't eat processed breads like white bread or most cereals or popcorn. You want to eat whole GRAIN carbs (not just whole wheat). And no sugars (other than the fruits). These things all are things are terribly hard for your body to process. Below is the diet my husband and I are doing for 2 weeks. I like it because it's flexible, it pushes us to be creative in finding things we like to eat, but it still gives you a healthier looking and feeling body. Proteins: Try and eat leaner meats (i.e. chicken, turkey, fish) however no meats are band in this diet, but I did find my body feeling "cleaner" when I just stuck to the leaner meats. You can also eat eggs, and protein shakes, and nuts. All proteins are good in this diet as long as they fit the following categories. Carbs: Only eat WHOLE grain carbs. Look on the back label and see if it says made with whole grains (whole wheat doesn't count). Oatmeal is great. There are crackers and breads that are whole grain, so don't get discouraged about thinking you'll have to cut out our beloved carbs. Absolutely no popcorn. Veggies: All veggies are acceptable. Sugars: You need to look on the label on the foods you buys/eat and make sure they are less than 5g of sugar. Anything more you need to stay away from. Like I mentioned earlier though, my husband and I have allowed fresh fruits into our diet. Keep in mind that you also need to eat balanced. Don't just eat pure protein or carbs. Feed your body and little bit of everything (granted the bulk of what you'll need to eat are veggies). Lastly, this is A diet. Not THE diet. There are many other different kinds of diets out there, and a lot of them produce the results people are looking for, my husband and I just choose this one. Please comment with any questions! :)
